Project Description

The landscape design project at St. Simons Island in Glynn County, Georgia, centers around the historic Coast Guard Station architecture, enhancing the surrounding area to create a vibrant, functional, and cohesive public space. The client, Glynn County, sought to integrate the design with the existing World War II Home Front Museum, reflecting the site’s rich historical context while addressing modern recreational and coastal needs.

The project includes a playground, parking area, and a patio offering stunning views of the adjacent beach. Additional amenities such as sand fencing, changing stations, a shower area with beach mats, and a volleyball court were thoughtfully designed to enhance the visitor experience. Given the site's proximity to the shoreline and its location within the Special Permit Area (SPA) and Jurisdictional Determination (JD) zones, the design had to comply with coastal regulations. This involved meticulous coordination with environmental agencies to ensure the project met all permitting and clearance requirements.

The landscape plan was designed not only to harmonize with the existing architecture but also to respect the natural coastal ecosystem. Special attention was given to integrating sustainable elements, such as beach mats and sand fencing, to manage erosion and protect the fragile dune system while enhancing public access and recreational use of the area.
